The only Natural History Museum located in the city of Lima is administered by the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM), an institution under the authority of the Ministry of Education of Peru.
Colección Natural [Natural Collection] documents the scientific research spaces of this institution, which are operated by professors, students and graduates of UNMSM. The laboratories correspond to areas of various scientific disciplines linked to the study and understanding of nature. The collections are spaces to which spectators of the museum do not have access, setting aside the speculative device of the museographic apparatus to give room to the analysis of specimens and materials. These environments host millions of organic and inorganic archives that are studied, accumulated, and deteriorate in private.
The process of artistic research is carried out on the basis of constant and objective observation. In Colección Natural, through the static gaze that reflects the atmospheres of the spaces, the sensation of timelessness that governs these environments becomes evident. Revealing as well the private relationship of the users of the collections through their traces, where the everyday intertwines with the enclosed scientific world.
